Romans 16:23 (New Century Version) 23 Gaius is letting me and the whole church here use his home. He also sends greetings to you, as do Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus.
His name is mentioned only once in the New Testament. His home was Corinth. So how did Brother Quartus get his name in the most sold, top selling book, ever in history.
Woman and men were martyred to have this book published. Untold lives suffered for their innocence and humility to read this book, we call the Bible.
Being a little self-centered, I ask the rhetorical question. How do I get my name out into the world of photography to get “recognition and “make a name” for myself other than my skill?
Brother Quartus gave me an insight into my quandary. NOTHING, do absolutely nothing. Absurd? yes. I must ask myself, whose kingdom am I building?
The New York Times, recognized by many as the “paper of record” in the USA does not come within a million miles of giving me “name recognition”. In contrast, if my name was published in the New Testament the best PR person could not have “placed my name” in the most public book ever read.
What happened to Brother Quartus?
He did not die a martyr death unlike his contemporaries. A woman Thodesia from Tyre, at 18 years of age, This story from a history book. “They tortured her with dreadful and most terrible torments in her sides and breasts, even to the very bones. And as she still breathed, and withal stood with a joyful and beaming countenance, he ordered her thrown into the waves of the sea. Another, In the city of Tyre, a youth named Ulpianus, after dreadful tortures and most severe scourgings, was enclosed in a raw oxhide, with a dog and with one of those poisonous reptiles, an asp, and cast into the sea”
Brother Quartus endured much suffering for his piety and converted many pagans to Christ, dying peacefully as a bishop in the city of Berytus, 50 A.D. (now Beirut in Lebanon).
The answer Brother Quartus gives me is simply GRACE, God’s Grace. The kind of grace that says, live in me,trust me, do your work with excellence and let Me promote or demote you. Cease from my vain labor to be noticed, praised and applauded.
That will take grace for a guy like me, who is often called “King Baby”
With affection
